ES 224 - Filipina/x/o American LGBTQ+ Identities and Experiences Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-6; Social Justice This course explores the identities and experiences of LGBTQ+ Filipina/x/o Americans. We will examine how colonialism and other systems continue to impact Filipina/x/os on personal, familial, local, and global levels.
Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-6 - Ethnic Studies, Overlay - Social Justice Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Evaluate the experiences of Filipina/x/o Americans across a spectrum of sexualities using social science and interdisciplinary methodologies.
- Analyze the varied expressions of gender identities and sexualities in Filipina/x/o American communities.
- Assess the major struggles of the Filipina/x/o LGBTQ+ community in the United States and across the globe.
- Discuss the cultural impact of Filipina/x/o LGBTQ+ people in the media globally.
- Articulate theories of LGBTQ+ identity and family development in a Filipina/x/o American context.
Social Justice Overlay Learning Outcomes
- Use a disciplinary perspective to analyze issues of social justice and equity;
- Describe the challenges to achieving social justice; and
- Identify ways in which individuals and/or groups can contribute to social justice within local communities, nations, or the world.
